Barco de peliculas began in 2017 by a group of people who shared the same goal: to be a metaphorical place where artists, the community and the ocean met. Through our organization we want to promote a dialogue which helps bring education closer to people and improve education in Chile and Latin America, creating interactive artistic activities open to many different people. It is due to this that we believe that “the ocean is a definitive space for free artistic creation”
The puerto de películas project is an idea that was born three years ago and which started to take shape in 2017, when the project was approved by the culture council. Our project consists of two parts, one in the ocean and one on land, to bring the community and artists closer together. The first objective is to create a series of micro-documentaries that’ll be directed and produced as we visit 20 port cities. This is in order to create the conditions needed for the films to be shown in the very same port cities. A second part of the project is parallel to the itinerary in which we have scheduled a series of commissioned projects in the cities we will visit, contacting the local artists and organizations that we are collaborating with.
Some of our commissioned projects will be: – Reflection about the difusion of knowledge from the now extinct Selk’nam tribe, to be developed around Punta Arenas, in the Magellanic Region of Chile. – Biopolitical artistic projects in the Medical School of Buenos Aires, sponspored by the Metropolitan School of Dramatic Arts. – LED light display on the main roads of Valparaíso, Chile; sponsored by the Valparaíso municipality. – Project in the neighborhood of Callao in Lima, Perú, in collaboration with Peruvian Cajón musicians (Cajón is a genre of music played on the street), in collaboration with Espacio Fugáz and the Callao government.
PdP project seeks to establish an active dialogue with the visited communities, for this reason the daily lives of the artists inhabiting these communities will be included; so we do so we will also record the relevant parts of the artistic process and its relation to the maritime environment, The videos that have already been made will be easily available to the public to watch free of charge in cultural institutions of the aforementioned port cities. We’ll create the conditions to schedule the public exhibition of the complete documentary in each city once the project is finished.
We seek to explore via film cultural life of the port cities of Latin America, how do the artists establish a connection with the territory? We say: “the sea is the ultimate landscape of creative liberty”. We will span through 20 port cities of Latin America, where we’ll film creative activities contributing to the port identity of each one.
